Caught a ride with the moon

Tessa won't mind me mentioning her... will you Tessa? Anyway I had a lovely email from Tessa who really wanted a Tori Amos papercut using lyrics from Tear in Your Hand. We discussed maybe a crescent moon and she said she'd like to see maybe the world dangling on a tiny thread. I designed it initially with a crescent moon peeking behind some clouds and some stars too... no room for the world on a thread, thought I.

When I emailed a jpg of the design to Tessa I could just tell she wasn't over the moon (to coin a phrase!)... she liked it, but she didn't LOVE it (and call me vain, I'm used to emails from people saying they LOVE LOVE LOVE the design and to get cutting!) SO... I went back to the drawing board and tried to get the earth on a string working with the design. I'm happy to say that the new design had the desired LOVE LOVE LOVE effect - hopefully she'll be pleased with the final papercut when this bad boy arrived in the post in the next day or two...

Spring has sprung...

..and about blinkin' time too! Since having the baby I find the lack of extra blood in my system means I'm back to my pre-pregnancy freezing cold feet and hands all the time. But with this beautiful weather we've been enjoying recently I am LOVING not feeling cold. Oh that and the blossom, daffodils, lime green baby leaves... the whole Springness SHEBANG.

Anyhoo, whilst enjoying springtime, the bubba (who is smiling huge smiles all the time now - ok ok, NEARLY all the time) and the amazing full nights' sleep I've been having for about 4 weeks now (slept through at around 8 weeks... bliss), I have found the time to do a few commissions. So I thought I'd share.

I did query the lack of 'some kind'... and apparently these are the original Dylan lyrics. That cheeky Hendrix added the 'some kind' to the 'way out of here'. Essentially putting words into the jokers mouth eh?

My first little papercut rose... quite a fiddly little blighter.

Enjoy the sunshine!

At last

I sent this one off in the post today. As I was cutting it out I had a bit of an Etta James fest. Good old Spotify. So now Nella has been introduced to Etta's beautiful voice. Although she had to put up with my loud voice singing along too...

UPDATE As requested, here's a pic of it framed. I think you'll agree the framer has done a fantastic job and it looks ace even if I do say so myself. Thanks to Corinne for sending me the final framed pic!

Yay for Creative Boom!

I got an email the other day from the lovely Avril from Creative Boom. She wanted to talk to little ole me for the site! Me? Surely not...

Anyhoo, what follows is an insight into my milky-baby-bubble-Um-Bongo lyrics-where-maths-should-be head. So if you're a bit bored and have 5 minutes to spare head over to Creative Boom for a read...

Spot the mistake...

I did this large commission for an anniversary towards the end of last year. I thought it looked quite good. I had lovely words to work with, the design worked well, I hand cut it from A3 and framed it in a lovely large frame and posted it off to the customer.

So it was mortally embarrassing when she emailed me having noticed a GLARING mistake... can you spot it?

Yup. There's two 'each's.
Read it again...

How the bleeping bleep did THAT happen??
I'm going to blame my shrunken baby-brain, as I was pregnant when I did this.

Ok, ok. There's no excuse. 16 years in advertising/graphic design has taught me I need to read and re-read, then proof read and check again during the whole design process. I guess I've been used to having account managers and clients seeing/checking designs and spotting any mistakes. But now I'm on my own. I know, I know. There's no excuse. I messed up. There you go.

The wonderfully patient customer has been so lovely about it. She sent it back to me *right* before Nella was born and has been patiently waiting for me to be back up and running again ever since. Well, I've finally done it! Just need to frame and post it. Phew!

The baby bubble has popped.
I have officially undertaken my first commission.
Swiftly followed by this one.
Which in turn was followed by a lasercut request.

They have all been framed and are off in the post today. I balanced 2 parcels on top of the pram and 1 parcel underneath the pram and wheeled my way to the post office. On my return there are two more commissions... and my notonthehighstreet shop isn't even open again yet.

I do love it, and I know I can refuse if I wanted to being on maternity leave and all, but I do love doing them. I love designing them with my laptop balanced on my knee, little Nella asleep in her little chair beside me. I love settling down to cut them out - anglepoise lamp pulled down... lovely new blades in my scalpels. Mr Papercuts taking Nella off for a walk so I can concentrate. It's like a little creative break from feeding, changing and playing. A healthy balance actually.

Anyhoo, gotta go. Nella has just woken up...
